Climate Groups Renew Windfall Tax Push as Oil Giants Report Billions

As US fossil fuel giants report soaring third-quarter profits amid the global price spikes of President Donald Trump’s war in Iran, climate advocates are intensifying demands for a windfall tax to shield struggling households and accelerate the transition toward renewable energy.

Chevron and ExxonMobil posted adjusted earnings of $10.4 billion and $17.5 billion respectively for the July-September period, following similar disclosures from Shell and TotalEnergies. These figures arrive as the industry faces scrutiny for capitalizing on geopolitical instability. Analysis from the Climate Solutions Lab at Brown University suggests US residents have paid an additional $147.8 billion for fuel since the bombing of Iran began in February.

Mahyar Sorour of the Sierra Club characterized the situation as a quid pro quo, alleging that industry campaign investments are yielding massive returns while the president personally benefits from the market surge. Advocates from Greenpeace and 350.org argue that this pattern of 'fossilflation' leaves the public to absorb costs at the pump and through climate-related disasters. With midterms approaching, campaigners are calling for aggressive taxation on excess profits to fund consumer protections and secure energy infrastructure.
