Waymo to phase out Uber integration in Austin and Atlanta by 2028

Starting January 2028, Waymo will begin decoupling its robotaxi operations from Uber in Austin and Atlanta. Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana confirmed the shift, signaling a move to consolidate the rider experience within Waymo’s proprietary smartphone app rather than relying on the ride-hailing giant’s platform for user acquisition.

The decision marks a strategic pivot for the autonomous vehicle firm, which initially sought scale through Uber’s massive user base. Mawakana noted that the current hybrid model—where riders often cannot distinguish between a robotaxi and a human-driven vehicle—has created a fragmented experience. By moving to its own app, the company aims to establish a direct relationship with its customers and provide a more predictable service.

While the partnership was originally slated to run until May 2028, Waymo is accelerating its exit to prioritize brand control. Uber maintains that it remains open to hosting autonomous partners on its platform, though it clarified that the specific choice to omit a dedicated robotaxi-only booking filter was a decision driven by Waymo. As the deadline approaches, the two companies are navigating the end of a collaboration that served as a crucial bridge for Waymo’s initial expansion into new urban markets.
