Xbox redesign promises faster PC and cloud gaming apps

The redesigned Xbox PC app launches up to 60 percent faster, Microsoft says, with faster-loading pages and simpler controller navigation. Xbox Insiders can begin testing it today, while a refreshed Xbox Cloud Gaming interface is due to roll out over the next few weeks.

Xbox redesign promises faster PC and cloud gaming apps

The update follows the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox Ally handheld devices last year, which highlighted how much work remained to make the PC app feel like a console experience on Windows. The redesigned app simplifies navigation for controller use and adds updated library filters and new ways to organize installed games. Friends now appear on the main page, with shortcuts to chat or join a party; Microsoft has also refreshed game cards, Home, Settings and animations.

Jason Beaumont, vice president of Xbox experiences, said Home, Store and Game Pass pages load up to 50 percent faster, while in-app windows open up to 65 percent faster. The writer who tested the app over several weeks said it felt noticeably quicker across a range of devices and easier to navigate with a controller. They also noted that the Game Bar interface on handhelds now feels out of step with the redesign; further updates are expected in the coming months.

The refreshed design is also coming to Xbox Cloud Gaming on the web, supported smart TVs and VR headsets. The web version adds a library tab for cloud games from users’ own collections and Xbox Game Pass, a desktop mode for larger displays, dark and light themes, and five high-contrast options for accessibility. Microsoft says the interfaces will be adapted for each screen while keeping core features familiar. The cloud gaming updates will roll out over the next few weeks.
