Kobo Stack will sync personal ebooks for a monthly fee

Kobo is adding a paid way to keep personal ebooks and documents in sync across its apps, website and e-readers. The new service, Kobo Stack, is launching alongside a major software update, while its initial availability excludes the United States.

Stack lets subscribers upload EPUB and PDF files of up to 200MB to Kobo Cloud, either through a drag-and-drop tool on Kobo’s website or by emailing them to a custom address. Files, along with reading progress, highlights and annotations, are available wherever users are signed in to their Kobo account. The service is similar to Amazon’s free Send to Kindle feature, but Kobo will charge a monthly fee.

Kobo Stack is part of version 6.0 of the company’s e-reader software, now available as an optional beta ahead of a broader release. E-reader support is initially limited to the Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra Colour and Elipsa 2E. Kobo says support for older devices made between 2018 and 2024 will arrive soon.

The initial rollout covers Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Spain, according to details shared by Kobo CEO Michael Tamblyn on Threads. The United States is not included. Canadian pricing is $3.99 per month.
