Mobileye Shifts Strategy with Plans for 2027 Robotaxi Fleet

After years of supplying driver-assistance chips to major automakers, Intel subsidiary Mobileye is moving to become a fleet operator. The Israeli firm announced plans to launch an autonomous taxi service in an undisclosed U.S. city by 2027, starting with an initial deployment of 100 vehicles.

Mobileye Shifts Strategy with Plans for 2027 Robotaxi Fleet

CEO Amnon Shashua stated that the company intends to scale this operation to 17,000 vehicles within five years of the launch. While Mobileye currently provides self-driving technology to partners like Volkswagen and its MOIA unit, this new service puts the company in direct competition with the very manufacturers it supplies. To manage the rollout, Mobileye will establish a dedicated operating business, utilizing its own transit app, Moovit, to handle consumer bookings.

The shift reflects a long-held belief by Shashua that the path to widespread consumer vehicle autonomy requires proving the technology through robotaxi networks first. While the company has not confirmed which vehicle platform will host its system, promotional materials featured a modified Ora iQ electric crossover from China's Great Wall Motors. Despite the move into operations, Shashua insisted the initiative serves as an extension of existing partnerships rather than a replacement, allowing the firm to gain direct experience and demonstrate the full capabilities of its proprietary Drive system.
