Graham Platner Blames Susan Collins for Supreme Court Voting Rights Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to effectively gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act has ignited sharp criticism from Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, who labeled the ruling a direct product of the judicial appointments facilitated by Senator Susan Collins.

Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority, argued that preventing race from influencing government decision-making is a constitutional necessity. The ruling effectively voids provisions that previously allowed minority voters to challenge racially discriminatory electoral maps, a move expected to reshape congressional districts across the South before the 2028 presidential election. The case originated from a challenge to a Louisiana map that had been redrawn to include a second majority-minority district.

Platner, a combat veteran and oyster farmer, did not mince words regarding the decision. He pointedly linked the outcome to Senator Susan Collins, citing her deciding vote for Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 and her support for Justice Amy Coney Barrett in 2020. Platner has previously called for aggressive ethics oversight of the Court and potential impeachment proceedings against Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito following reports of undisclosed gifts from prominent donors. Dissenting in the case, Justice Elena Kagan warned that the ruling abandons the Court’s duty to uphold the Voting Rights Act and will cause grave, long-term damage to electoral equality.
