Apple Fights Secret UK Order to Bypass iCloud Encryption

Apple has launched a formal challenge against a clandestine British government mandate requiring the company to bypass end-to-end encryption for its users. The dispute centers on a technical capability notice issued last October, marking the latest clash over privacy rights and state surveillance powers within the United Kingdom.

Apple Fights Secret UK Order to Bypass iCloud Encryption

The tech giant filed its complaint with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, the specialized court overseeing government surveillance operations. The legal order demands that Apple provide access to iCloud backups, specifically targeting accounts utilizing Advanced Data Protection. When enabled, this feature secures data with end-to-end encryption, rendering the contents inaccessible even to Apple itself.

Critics categorize the government request as a functional backdoor into secure systems. This standoff follows a pattern of escalating tension between Cupertino and London. In early 2025, the U.K. government attempted a similar maneuver, which was ultimately abandoned following intervention from the Trump administration. In response to that initial pressure, Apple briefly disabled Advanced Data Protection for U.K. accounts. The current litigation represents a renewed attempt by authorities to compel technical cooperation, despite Apple’s public refusal to weaken its security architecture.
