Hedge Fund Volatility Spikes During Chaotic July Sell-Off

A 67% collapse at Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness fund headlined a brutal July for major hedge funds, as market turbulence across Asia and shifting investor sentiment toward artificial intelligence forced managers to grapple with significant losses and sudden margin calls.

Hedge Fund Volatility Spikes During Chaotic July Sell-Off

The volatility began as a regional contagion. Dymon Asia and Pinpoint suffered sharp declines of 6.5% and 9% respectively, hampered by economic instability in Japan and equity jitters in Korea. Meanwhile, Izzy Englander’s Millennium Management dropped 2.1%, tempering its annual gains to 8.2%.

The situation reached a breaking point when Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, faced a total meltdown of his $45 billion equity portfolio. The subsequent emergency sale of his public equity holdings to Citadel provided a late-month floor for the broader market, preventing a deeper slide in the S&P 500. Despite the intervention, the month closed as a clear reminder of the fragility currently gripping portfolios heavily exposed to tech and AI sectors.
