Apple to Bridge iPhone Clipboard With Windows PCs in Europe

Apple is developing a cross-device clipboard feature that will enable users to copy content on an iPhone and paste it directly onto a Windows PC. This engineering project, currently exclusive to the European Union, follows a formal interoperability request submitted by Microsoft earlier this year.

The initiative stems from strict requirements under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which mandates that digital gatekeepers open their closed ecosystems to third-party tools. Microsoft argued that existing iOS restrictions prevented developers from achieving seamless background synchronization between smartphones and external hardware. Apple confirmed the development in a June 26 update, characterizing the project as a significant technical undertaking. The company expects to finalize the solution by autumn 2027, with a subsequent release planned for a developer beta. Once implemented, this functionality will allow Microsoft to build extensions for sharing and importing pasteboard items across paired accessories. This development marks another step in Apple's regulatory compliance in Europe, where the firm has already been forced to expand support for third-party smartwatches and earbuds to satisfy local competition mandates.
