Trump’s Cabinet of Billionaires: A Government by the Ultra-Wealthy

Fifty-seven high-ranking Trump administration officials possess individual net worths exceeding $100 million, a concentration of private wealth unprecedented in modern American governance. According to a new report from the watchdog group Public Citizen, this influx of ultra-wealthy appointees has triggered urgent warnings regarding systemic conflicts of interest and policy capture.

The analysis reveals that eight officials hold billionaire status, with more than half of the 57 identified individuals having funneled a combined $65 million into Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. This roster of elite appointees marks a significant departure from previous administrations; for comparison, the Biden, Obama, and George W. Bush administrations each maintained fewer than six members with comparable wealth. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) characterized the current administration as a government "of the rich, by the rich, for the rich," citing the deep financial ties between agency heads and the industries they now oversee.

Key figures include Education Secretary Linda McMahon, worth up to $1.3 billion, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, whose department holds regulatory power over his family’s firm, Cantor Fitzgerald. Critics argue this crossover creates a "disconnect" between policymakers and the average American household, which earns roughly $64,500 annually. Since January 2025, the administration has paired these appointments with a policy agenda that includes $1 trillion in tax cuts for the top 1%, alongside the systematic dismantling of worker protections and the gutting of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Public Citizen’s Doug Pasternak warns that the breadth of this economic divide threatens the welfare of the nation’s democratic institutions.
