Fusion Startups Pivot to Defense as Climate Funding Stalls

A $3 million Patriot missile firing at a $200 consumer drone highlights the unsustainable economics of modern air defense. As venture capital for climate technology tightens, fusion startups are finding a lucrative solution: pivoting their laser-based research toward the defense sector to solve the military's efficiency crisis.

Fusion Startups Pivot to Defense as Climate Funding Stalls

The fusion industry is returning to its national security origins as the promise of clean energy on the grid faces a funding drought. With traditional climate tech venture capital stalling, startups are leveraging their high-energy laser expertise to address the military's urgent need for affordable, rapid-fire weaponry capable of countering drone warfare.

Denver-based Xcimer recently secured a strategic investment from RTX Ventures, bringing the defense contractor into the fold to explore the potential of Xcimer’s massive laser systems. While Xcimer aims to build a power plant using its Phoenix laser technology, the high-power output required for fusion is inherently compatible with the requirements of directed-energy weapons. Simultaneously, Pacific Fusion has formalized a memorandum of understanding with the National Nuclear Security Administration to utilize its new New Mexico demonstration facility for high-energy-density experiments. By aligning their technical roadmaps with the needs of the defense establishment, these companies are securing vital capital that the private market is currently hesitant to provide.
