Lyft pivots to driverless future with Nashville robotaxi launch

Lyft has officially entered the commercial robotaxi market, launching driverless Waymo vehicles in Nashville. This move marks the company’s first large-scale integration of autonomous technology without human operators, signaling a strategic shift after years of offloading its internal research divisions to focus on third-party fleet partnerships.

The Nashville deployment allows riders to hail a Waymo directly through either the Waymo or Lyft applications. Under this model, Lyft manages the operational heavy lifting—vehicle maintenance, infrastructure, and depot logistics—through its subsidiary, Flexdrive. This structure represents a departure from the company’s earlier, unsuccessful attempt to build proprietary autonomous software, a division it sold to Toyota’s Woven Planet for 550 million dollars in 2021.

Jeremy Bird, Lyft’s executive vice president of growth, indicated that the company is now prioritizing global expansion, with a specific interest in markets that can support a hybrid network of both human-driven and autonomous vehicles. While current efforts remain concentrated on the Waymo partnership in the United States and upcoming plans with Baidu in London, the company aims to diversify its autonomous offerings throughout 2026. This international focus reflects a broader corporate evolution, positioning Lyft as a global mobility platform rather than a domestic ride-hailing service.
