AI Startup Crosby Bids for Assets of Collapsing Law Giant Weil Gotshal

Two-year-old AI-first law firm Crosby has moved to acquire the brand, trademark, and internal assets of the storied Wall Street firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges. As the 1,200-lawyer institution prepares for a formal dissolution vote, the Silicon Valley startup is also aggressively recruiting its departing legal talent.

AI Startup Crosby Bids for Assets of Collapsing Law Giant Weil Gotshal

The collapse of Weil Gotshal follows a series of internal crises, including the refusal of a designated successor to lead the firm and the failure of merger negotiations with Willkie Farr & Gallagher. While the firm’s downfall was driven by personnel shifts and strategic stagnation, the entry of Crosby signals a stark transition toward automation. Unlike competitors that sell software to traditional firms, Crosby operates as a full-service legal entity built entirely around proprietary AI.

Crosby’s ambition to absorb a legacy giant is backed by significant capital. The startup recently secured an $85 million war chest, including a $60 million Series B round led by Lux and Index. With earlier backing from Sequoia and Bain Capital Ventures, the firm is positioning its technology as a replacement for the traditional partnership model. Whether the bid succeeds remains uncertain, but the proposal marks a potential pivot point where a decades-old legal legacy could be absorbed into an automated, high-speed practice.
