His return has reignited criticism regarding his extended leave and lack of transparency. Melanie D'Arrigo, executive director of the Campaign for New York Health, condemned the senator for utilizing taxpayer-subsidized healthcare and paid leave—benefits he has frequently opposed for the general public. Similarly, former Democratic Congressman Charles Booker, who is vying for the seat in the upcoming midterms alongside Republican Rep. Andy Barr, previously labeled the vacancy an embarrassment, citing the economic struggles of Kentucky residents while the senator remained absent.
