Apple’s AirPods 5 Set a New Bar for Open-Ear Audio

Apple has defied the industry trend of rising prices by launching the AirPods 5 at $149, undercutting the previous generation while packing in significant upgrades. By adding effective active noise cancellation and long-awaited swipe volume controls to a non-Pro model, the company has effectively rendered its own entry-level version obsolete.

The AirPods 5 maintain the signature open-ear design, eschewing silicone tips for a fit that rests outside the ear canal. Despite the familiar silhouette, internal acoustic architecture has been overhauled to provide deeper bass and clearer vocal separation. Subjective testing confirms a noticeable improvement in sound quality, with instruments remaining distinct even during dense, guitar-heavy tracks. These hardware tweaks, paired with denser mesh ports, contribute to a stronger passive attenuation that complements the upgraded active noise cancellation.

Functionality receives a major boost with the inclusion of stem-based volume swipes, a feature previously reserved for Pro models. This addition addresses a common criticism regarding the convenience of wireless earbuds, allowing users to keep their devices tucked away. Furthermore, the transparency mode is remarkably natural, avoiding the artificial high-frequency boost found in many competing products. While battery life remains a point of contention—offering just five hours with ANC enabled—the seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem remains an unmatched advantage for iOS users. At $149, the premium model is the clear choice, making the $129 base version a difficult recommendation for most.
