Insta360 shifts focus beyond 360-degree cameras

With a commanding 73 percent share of the global 360-degree camera market, Insta360 is pivoting toward a broader horizon. The company, which recently committed $298 million to memory chip procurement, is moving to challenge traditional imaging giants like Sony and Canon by venturing into mirrorless cameras and smart eyewear.

The company’s ambition is marked by the opening of its first US flagship store in New York’s Times Square and the milestone of 10 million units sold. Cofounder Max Richter describes the shift as a transition from a niche hardware maker to a comprehensive tech imaging firm. Despite these moves, the company maintains a pragmatic stance regarding the competition. Richter notes that their strategy is not to displace the smartphone or directly engage with the feature-heavy AI glasses currently flooding the market.

Instead, Insta360 intends to occupy the space between casual mobile photography and professional rigs. By focusing on creative expression rather than replacing existing tools, the company is testing prototypes that prioritize unique imaging capabilities over the standard intelligence features found in current wearables. This experimental phase suggests a long-term goal to redefine its identity in the consumer electronics landscape.
