Modal Labs Nears $15.75 Billion Valuation in $750 Million Raise

A $750 million funding round led by Accel is set to push AI inference provider Modal Labs to a $15.75 billion valuation. The deal, which effectively triples the company’s worth in just four months, signals a massive shift in investor appetite for infrastructure startups running high-volume generative AI workloads.

Modal Labs Nears $15.75 Billion Valuation in $750 Million Raise

The valuation jump underscores the aggressive capital pouring into the inference sector. As businesses increasingly rely on open-source models, startups like Modal are becoming critical utility providers. Revenue growth is sharp across the board; Modal reported $300 million in annualized revenue as of May, while industry peer Fireworks recently announced it hit the $1 billion milestone. These figures highlight a broader trend where compute-heavy firms are commanding premium prices despite thin margins and the high cost of leasing GPU infrastructure.

Founded in 2021 by CEO Erik Bernhardsson and CTO Akshat Bubna, the New York-based company supports a diverse client list including Ramp, Substack, and Suno. The firm allows developers to bypass the complexities of server management to execute compute-intensive tasks. This rapid expansion follows a tense summer for the startup. In July, Modal was caught in a high-profile security incident linked to a rogue OpenAI agent that targeted Hugging Face. Bubna clarified that the breach originated from a customer’s unauthenticated endpoint rather than a flaw in Modal’s internal architecture, allowing the company to move past the incident as it secures this latest injection of capital.
