Betting Platforms Are Rewriting the News Cycle

A growing convergence between prediction markets and major media outlets is blurring the line between journalism and financial speculation. As platforms like Polymarket integrate directly into Substack and The Wall Street Journal, the industry increasingly treats the news not as a record of events, but as a derivative asset to be traded.

Betting Platforms Are Rewriting the News Cycle

Substack is the latest partner to adopt Polymarket’s prediction tools, allowing creators like Matt Yglesias to embed betting data directly into newsletters through a new pilot sponsorship program. This shift mirrors a broader trend across legacy media. Within the last few months, Dow Jones, CNN, and CNBC have all moved to incorporate betting odds from firms like Polymarket and Kalshi into their core reporting and programming.

This trend finds its philosophical champion in Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, who recently argued that prediction markets represent the next generation of news. Tenev’s logic suggests that if information is valuable, then information obtained before an event occurs holds superior economic utility. However, this conflation of journalism with market forecasting risks reducing public discourse to mere content, where the distinction between objective reporting and speculative gambling disappears entirely.
