Aisata Diallo tackles the physical toll of hair braiding with Tressfecta

Braiding hair is an intensely manual, eight-hour ordeal that often leaves stylists with chronic pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Aisata Diallo, a former braider who abandoned the craft due to its physical demands, is now developing the Plait Pilot, a device designed to automate the tedious process of hair separation.

The startup, Tressfecta, aims to solve the ergonomic challenges inherent in styling textured hair. Diallo’s prototype, the Plait Pilot, allows a stylist to load a pack of hair into the machine, select the desired section size, and receive dispensed segments ready for immediate use. This innovation targets the initial preparation phase, which currently consumes hours of a stylist’s day. Building hardware for this niche remains a formidable challenge, particularly because textured hair requires a nuanced approach to varying lengths and densities.

Diallo is currently bootstrapping the company while leveraging grants and accelerator programs to refine the prototype. Fundraising for hardware startups in the beauty space has historically proven difficult, yet she is actively engaging with professional braiders to field-test the technology. Following her participation in the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield 200 in San Francisco, she is focused on scaling the development of the device. By addressing the physical reality of the salon chair, she hopes to make the profession sustainable for those who have long been overlooked by mainstream beauty innovation.
