Nathan Fielder and the Mirror Maze of Elizabeth Holmes

“Isn’t it weird that I did a TV show about a business scam, and you got in trouble for a business scam?” comedian Nathan Fielder asks Elizabeth Holmes. This exchange anchors a surreal documentary effort where Fielder, known for his deadpan artifice, attempts to decode the infamous Theranos founder’s impenetrable psyche.

Nathan Fielder and the Mirror Maze of Elizabeth Holmes

Before surrendering for an eleven-year prison sentence in 2023, Holmes and her husband, Billy Evans, invited A24 to document her final month of freedom. They hoped for an exoneration; instead, they met Fielder, a filmmaker whose work thrives on the friction between staged reality and uncomfortable truth. The resulting film functions as a hall of mirrors, layering Holmes’ own self-mythologizing against the Hollywood dramatization of her crimes.

Fielder recruits Amanda Seyfried, who portrayed Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout, to help dissect the footage. The project descends into a recursive loop: Seyfried watches real-life clips of Holmes watching a fictionalized version of herself. When Fielder struggles to capture the nuance of their conversations after filming ends, he and Seyfried script and rehearse their past interactions from memory. The boundary between performance and reality dissolves further when Evans reveals an AI avatar of his wife, which he wheels to the dinner table to simulate her presence. By the time Seyfried breaks character to declare that Holmes’ public perception is a product of her own actions, the film has moved past the question of guilt and into the unsettling territory of how much of our identities we curate, and how much we actually believe our own inventions.
