ESG Strategies Gain Traction Among UK Institutional Investors

Nearly nine in ten UK investment professionals expect sustainable and ESG-integrated funds to claim a larger portion of client portfolios over the coming year. Despite global market volatility and political friction, industry appetite for credible, long-term stewardship strategies continues to rise, according to new research from Rathbones.

ESG Strategies Gain Traction Among UK Institutional Investors

Four in five surveyed fund selectors currently hold between 11 and 25 percent of their assets in sustainable funds, with room for expansion as few participants exceed that threshold. For 94 percent of independent financial advisers and discretionary managers, active stewardship—specifically voting and engagement—remains the critical benchmark for fund selection. David Harrison, head of sustainability at Rathbones Asset Management, noted that selectors are prioritizing clear, demonstrable processes over short-term market noise.

Simultaneously, the private capital sector is moving toward standardization. Reframe Venture, the British Business Bank, and UK Private Capital have introduced a unified ESG reporting template designed to streamline metrics for venture capital and growth-stage businesses. By aligning with existing frameworks like the ESG Data Convergence Initiative and the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, the initiative aims to reduce reporting burdens while providing institutional investors with consistent data. UK Private Capital CEO Michael Moore emphasized that the move supports proportionate reporting, noting that 26 percent of UK startups already track their carbon footprints, significantly outpacing their US counterparts.
