The deal brings together two companies with shared roots as alumni of the 2016 Y Combinator batch. Pipecat serves as a critical orchestration layer, managing voice and video streams while minimizing latency by coordinating speech-to-text, large language models, and text-to-speech outputs. Daily, which had previously secured over $62 million in funding from backers including Tiger Global and Nat Friedman, will retain its focus on the open-source framework under the Deepgram umbrella.
Deepgram CEO Scott Stephenson and Daily co-founder Kwindla Kramer both emphasized that maintaining Pipecat as a vendor-neutral, open-source project was a primary driver for the merger. Beyond the infrastructure acquisition, Deepgram is launching the Real-Time Context Standard (RCS). This protocol aims to standardize metadata for AI agents, enabling better interpretation of audio cues like whispers or specific emotional signals. With this integration, Deepgram positions itself to capture a broader portion of the real-time AI market, moving beyond its core speech recognition roots to support end-to-end agent development.
