Amazon expands Alexa shopping features ahead of holiday rush

With over 400 million consumers already using Alexa for shopping annually, Amazon is rolling out more than 100 new capabilities to its voice assistant. The update targets the friction points of e-commerce, allowing users to handle administrative tasks like subscription cycles and delivery logistics through simple voice commands.

The expansion shifts Alexa from a basic search tool to a functional shopping administrator. Users can now create and edit lists, modify the frequency of subscription deliveries, and update specific drop-off instructions for courier drivers without opening the app. The assistant also gains the ability to field direct inquiries regarding Prime and Audible billing, providing a hands-free solution for payment-related troubleshooting.

These additions follow a significant surge in demand for agentic AI features, which Amazon claims have grown eightfold since the start of the year. By integrating these management tools just before the holiday season, the company aims to solidify Alexa’s role as a primary interface for its retail ecosystem, building on previous launches like its AI-driven product notification system.
