Senior editor Genevieve Ko introduced the feature last Friday, positioning it as a way to tailor instructions to a cook’s immediate requirements. The system, which appears as a text box at the bottom of recipe pages, offers practical guidance—such as advising that baby spinach be added later in a cooking process than kale to prevent premature wilting. These modifications remain private, ensuring that customized versions cannot be published or shared through the platform.
Despite the intended utility, the rollout has faced resistance in the publication’s comment section. Subscribers have raised pointed questions about the environmental footprint of AI infrastructure and the long-term impact on the core user experience. When pressed by users on whether the tool could be disabled, Ko confirmed that no such option currently exists, though she emphasized that engagement with the chatbot remains entirely voluntary. The feature is presently available to iOS subscribers, with a broader release scheduled for the near future.
