Elon Musk Slashes Grok Bot Limits Amid Skyrocketing Costs

Halloween weekend brought a harsh reality for Grok Bot subscribers as usage limits hit their ceiling overnight. While users reported sudden spikes in consumption, Elon Musk confirmed on Sunday that the restriction was a deliberate move to curb expenses he described as unsustainably high relative to current revenue streams.

The SpaceX CEO addressed the situation in a direct reply to a user on X, though he has remained silent on the issue across his primary feed. Despite these operational constraints, Musk continues to promote the bot’s utility, including its ability to assist with holiday gift shopping. The pivot comes at a delicate time for the company, which recently highlighted its AI division as a rare beacon of profitability in a sector known for burning cash.

According to a filing released last month, the newly renamed Super Intelligence division generated $431 million in profit, with AI now accounting for 52% of SpaceX’s total income. These figures would have reached even higher margins if not for the $1.2 billion in one-time costs absorbed during the acquisition of Cursor. Musk has previously characterized the growth of Grok Bot as the fastest he has ever witnessed in his career, yet he has provided no clarity on how these tightened usage caps will affect subscribers in the long term.
