Squarespace cuts 300 jobs in strategic restructuring

Squarespace is eliminating approximately 19% of its global workforce, a move affecting roughly 300 employees. The web hosting company, which transitioned back to private ownership earlier this year, cited a need to sharpen operational priorities and accelerate growth as the industry grapples with a rapid shift toward generative AI development.

The layoffs arrive as the website-building sector faces intense pressure from AI-driven tools. Platforms now offer "vibe-coding" features, allowing users to generate functional frontend designs through simple prompts. This technological pivot has forced legacy players to adapt or risk obsolescence. Rival firm Wix recently acquired Base44 for $80 million, while newer entrants like Lovable secured a $13.3 billion valuation in August. Google has similarly entered the fray with its Stitch interface generator.

Squarespace is attempting to recalibrate its own offerings to stay competitive in this automated landscape. The company launched its Blueprint AI tool earlier this year and is currently managing a waitlist for Forma, an upcoming AI-native platform. Despite these efforts, the firm has navigated a turbulent financial path since its 2021 IPO, eventually opting to return to private status via a $7 billion equity deal in 2024 after struggling to sustain public market enthusiasm.
