The tech giant’s directive requires developers to implement updated content descriptors to ensure age ratings accurately mirror app functionality. While major dating platforms already enforce adult-only access, the shift specifically targets AI-driven services, including apps like Character.AI and Replika, where users engage in simulated romantic relationships. These platforms have seen massive adoption, with top apps in the category reaching 220 million global downloads by last summer.
Beyond romantic features, Apple is demanding transparency regarding location tracking. Apps that share a user’s real-world coordinates with third parties must now explicitly disclose this functionality. This move follows the company’s recent global rollout of age assurance technology and expanded parental control suites.
