Amazon will handle orders and delivery alerts, and customers can pay with their existing Amazon payment methods. Uber Eats will send the final receipt. The companies say the arrangement is designed to let shoppers buy restaurant meals, groceries and household items in one place.
The deal marks Amazon’s return to restaurant delivery after it shut down its Amazon Restaurants service. Rather than build a delivery operation for prepared meals, Amazon is again working with a partner. It previously offered Prime members free delivery through Grubhub.
For Uber, the partnership opens access to tens of millions of Prime shoppers who are already accustomed to home delivery. The company can reach them through Amazon rather than spending on app-store advertising to attract them. The deal comes as Uber faces a changed competitive landscape following the merger of rivals DoorDash and Instacart. DoorDash is the larger restaurant-delivery player, and Uber is looking to put pressure on its rival through the Amazon tie-up.
