Reports indicate this partnership will grant Hamm significant sway over future drilling policies on public lands, potentially benefiting his corporate interests as the incoming administration seeks to dismantle existing environmental guardrails.

During the transition, Burgum and Hamm have spearheaded efforts to repeal electric vehicle tax credits established under the Inflation Reduction Act. Burgum has frequently characterized the current energy landscape as a conflict, promising to unleash liquid fuels and reverse what he describes as an attack on American energy. His nomination has drawn sharp condemnation from environmental groups, with the Center for Biological Diversity labeling him an oligarch disconnected from the preservation of natural heritage.

Beyond federal policy, Burgum faces controversy at home regarding his support for a 2,000-mile carbon pipeline proposed by Summit Carbon Solutions.
