USDA Chief Celebrates Removal of 5 Million People From Food Aid

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins characterized the removal of 5 million people from the federal food stamp program as a significant victory for the Trump administration. The sharp reduction in SNAP enrollment follows the passage of a 2025 Republican budget law that implemented the largest food aid cuts in American history.

Speaking at an event in Minnesota, Rollins framed the decline in participation as a success for those who prioritize work requirements over government assistance. The administration's policy, which expanded mandatory work criteria, has led to a massive exodus from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program since the legislation took effect last summer.

Data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggests the administration's narrative regarding employment gains is disconnected from economic reality. The think tank estimates that 4.5 million people have lost benefits, including at least 1.5 million children, while national unemployment has remained stagnant at roughly 4 percent since July 2025. Policy analysts argue that the decline in enrollment is not driven by reduced need or a surge in hiring, but by the stricter eligibility hurdles established by the GOP-led budget package. Critics have pushed back against the administration's celebration of these figures, highlighting the immediate financial hardship faced by vulnerable families who no longer qualify for federal support.
