Zoox Begins Commercial Robotaxi Operations in Las Vegas

After a year of complimentary service, Amazon-owned Zoox is transitioning to a paid model for its robotaxi fleet in Las Vegas. Starting August 10, the company will officially launch commercial operations, signaling a significant shift in its decade-long effort to deploy purpose-built autonomous vehicles on public roads.

The transition follows a crucial regulatory victory. Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration granted Zoox a two-year exemption from specific federal motor vehicle safety standards. Because the company’s cube-like vehicles lack traditional steering wheels and pedals, this waiver was essential to authorize the collection of passenger fares. The permit allows for the deployment of up to 2,500 vehicles.

Zoox, which operates under Amazon’s umbrella, plans to structure its pricing similarly to traditional ride-hailing services. Passengers will see a set fee before booking based on distance, time, and route, with additional surcharges for high-demand locations like the airport or venues such as the Sphere and T-Mobile Arena. While the company continues testing in San Francisco and Austin, those markets remain free-to-ride as Zoox awaits the necessary state-level permits to begin charging there.
