Substack and FIRE characterized this incident as a dangerous escalation in government efforts to silence dissent against American foreign policy.
This project expands the existing Substack Defender program, which has provided legal aid to dozens of creators navigating defamation and trademark litigation since 2020. While the platform has historically focused on independent journalists, this new effort extends support to writers regardless of whether they publish on Substack. The company has invited creators who believe they are being targeted for their writing to contact them or FIRE directly for assistance.
