Nitter and XCancel shutter as legal pressure from X intensifies

Privacy-focused alternatives to X, including the open-source project Nitter and the redirect service XCancel, have officially ceased operations. This follows a persistent legal campaign by X, which alleged that these platforms bypassed critical API restrictions and data scraping rules to provide ad-free, account-less access to social media content.

The final blow arrived on Friday, September 11, when Nitter’s GitHub repository was transitioned to a read-only archived status. Shortly thereafter, XCancel followed suit, displaying a notice on its homepage citing ongoing legal proceedings as the reason for the indefinite suspension. These shutdowns mark the end of a long-running cat-and-mouse game between the social network and developers who sought to strip away tracking cookies and JavaScript from the user experience.

For years, Nitter provided a clean, clutter-free interface for those wishing to monitor public posts without logging into an account. X management views this model as a direct threat to its monetization strategy, which relies on serving ads to every visitor. This shift mirrors the company’s earlier decision to ban third-party clients like Tweetbot and Twitterrific. While Nitter had previously attempted to survive by requiring instances to connect to active X accounts, the latest cease-and-desist letter proved insurmountable. The project developers did not respond to requests for comment, leaving users who preferred a lurker-friendly experience without a viable alternative.
