SpaceX Targets Orbital Milestone for Starship on September 22

This mission follows a July test flight that successfully demonstrated deployment capabilities, though the hardware burned up shortly after. Achieving a stable orbit is the critical next step for SpaceX as it works to phase out the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets. CEO Elon Musk has signaled that the transition to Starship depends on establishing a reliable, high-frequency flight cadence to optimize engineering resources.

Despite the ambitious orbital goal, the company is opting for caution regarding recovery hardware. SpaceX will not attempt to catch the Super Heavy booster or the Starship upper stage using launch towers, citing the potential for catastrophic setbacks. Engineers have implemented hardware and software modifications to the booster following engine ignition issues during the previous flight. Meanwhile, the heat shield has undergone updates informed by the recovery of the upper stage from the Indian Ocean, which survived its simulated landing intact after the July mission.
