Brian Chesky: The AI Agent Era Requires a New Operating System

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky argues that current AI development is missing its mark by focusing on simple chatbots rather than robust, interoperable infrastructure. He contends that for consumer AI agents to truly function, the industry needs a dedicated operating system that allows software to act as collaborative, agentic tools.

Brian Chesky: The AI Agent Era Requires a New Operating System

Chesky remains skeptical of the chatbot-only interface for e-commerce, noting that travel planning is an inherently visual and collaborative experience. While Airbnb recently launched AI-powered search, he views this as a midpoint rather than an endgame. The company is currently exploring 'multiplayer' AI interfaces that allow groups to plan trips together, moving away from the solitary nature of existing AI tools. He believes the future will balance deterministic, designer-led interfaces with generative elements, as human designers often create more intuitive experiences than raw generative prompts.

The core obstacle, according to Chesky, is that current AI development ignores the need for a foundational OS. He points out that while companies like OpenAI have attempted to build app stores, they lack the underlying developer kits required for true functionality. For AI agents to replace or augment apps effectively, platforms like iOS and Android must evolve to support agent-to-agent interoperability at the kernel level. Until then, he expects apps to simply incorporate agents internally rather than becoming fully agentic platforms. Looking ahead, Airbnb plans to integrate voice-based agents into its service this fall, reflecting Chesky's belief that voice will eventually surpass typing as the primary mode of human-computer interaction.
