AIPAC Re-enters Michigan Senate Race With Spending Against El-Sayed

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super PAC, the United Democracy Project, has injected $95,000 into the Michigan Senate race to fund mailers opposing Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, signaling a strategic pivot to boost Republican Mike Rogers just weeks before the midterm election.

The Federal Election Commission filing follows a heated debate between the candidates, where Rogers explicitly welcomed the group's intervention. His stance marks a sharp reversal from August, when his campaign reportedly urged the organization to stay on the sidelines to avoid negative optics surrounding Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. At that time, Rogers appeared to heed concerns regarding the group’s political toxicity, leading the super PAC to shelve planned attack ads.

El-Sayed framed the new spending as a sign of weakness, suggesting his opponent is struggling to gain traction on his own merits. While this $95,000 expenditure represents the group’s first direct intervention in the general election, Rogers has already participated in multiple fundraising events hosted by the organization. Defending the move, Rogers dismissed the significance of the mailers while attacking El-Sayed’s record. The intervention underscores the persistent influence of the United Democracy Project, which previously funneled millions into the state’s Democratic primary to defeat progressive candidates.
