AMD Acquires Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2 Billion

Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, bringing her expertise in computer vision and world modeling to the firm’s semiconductor roadmap. Her startup, World Labs, focuses on deep learning architectures that interpret physical environments, a capability deemed essential for the future of robotics and synthetic data generation. The deal marks a significant escalation in AMD’s effort to challenge Nvidia, specifically by integrating specialized software ecosystems directly into its hardware architecture.

For AMD, the move addresses a glaring deficit in its current product portfolio. While Nvidia has aggressively pushed its own world models like Cosmos, AMD has largely relied on text- and video-based models. Integrating World Labs’ Marble—a tool capable of creating high-fidelity simulations for robot training—allows AMD to offer a more robust platform for industrial automation and humanoids. Li stated that the partnership provides the scale necessary to transition her research from the lab to high-performance hardware, a move that could prove pivotal as companies like Tesla and Figure look for better ways to train systems in environments lacking sufficient real-world data. The transaction is slated to close by year-end, pending standard regulatory review.
