Piguet Galland Defines the Augmented Banker

Jordi Domenech, head of technology at Swiss private bank Piguet Galland, is steering the institution toward an "augmented banker" model. By equipping human advisors with AI tools while keeping personal judgment at the core of client relationships, the bank aims to boost efficiency without sacrificing the trust essential to wealth management.

The bank reported a 10 per cent efficiency gain after integrating Microsoft Copilot, a result driven by early investments in cloud infrastructure and staff training. Rather than imposing top-down mandates, Domenech encouraged employees to build their own prototypes, which the technology team then reviews and standardizes. This strategy allows for rapid experimentation while maintaining the rigorous controls necessary for a financial institution.

Balancing Innovation and Expertise

Domenech emphasizes that AI adoption is a cultural challenge rather than merely a technical one. To prevent a digital divide, the bank pairs younger, tech-savvy employees with experienced staff, ensuring that institutional knowledge is transferred and applied critically. This collaboration also serves a long-term goal: capturing the expertise of retiring professionals in reusable digital agents.

As clients increasingly arrive with conclusions generated by public AI tools, the role of the advisor is shifting. Domenech argues that bankers must now act as filters, weighing machine-generated insights against reliable data and individual client circumstances. By verifying these outputs, the bank reinforces the human advisor's value, ensuring that technology remains a supportive tool rather than a replacement for professional discernment.
