Apple Watch Begins Beta Testing AI-Powered Conversation Tools

Apple has launched beta testing for its "Audio Intelligence" suite, bringing generative AI capabilities to the Apple Watch Series 12. Included in the iOS 27.3 update, the tools allow users to capture 15-second conversation replays and generate automated meeting summaries, marking a significant push into ambient wearable computing.

The rollout introduces four distinct features: sound detection, song identification, Live Rewind, and Siri Recaps. Live Rewind functions as a short-term memory aid, letting users double-press the digital crown to retrieve a text snippet of the previous 15 seconds of speech. These snippets are transient, deleting automatically after 30 seconds unless manually saved to the Siri app.

Siri Recaps offers a more comprehensive note-taking utility, summarizing discussions into key takeaways like deadlines or financial details. To address privacy concerns, Apple confirmed the system does not record raw audio for long-term storage or identify individual speakers. The process relies on the S11 chip to detect speech, which is then encrypted and sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute for summarization before being purged from servers.

Privacy safeguards remain central to the deployment. Apple designed the feature to automatically filter out sensitive data, such as government identifiers or authentication details. Users maintain granular control over the system, with options to schedule recaps for specific hours or disable them entirely via the Control Center. While these features are currently exclusive to developers using the Series 12 and Ultra 4 hardware, a public beta is expected to follow.
