Canva to Lay Off 22 Percent of Workforce in Major Restructuring

Canva CEO Melanie Perkins announced a sweeping corporate restructuring today that will result in the departure of 1,271 employees, representing 22 percent of the company’s total staff. The move arrives as the design platform shifts its internal architecture toward a more centralized model to sharpen its long-term focus.

Perkins framed the decision as a necessary reset to return the company to its roots, emphasizing the need for smaller, autonomous teams capable of agile decision-making. The restructuring consolidates the Product, Growth, and Platform divisions into a single organization, a move intended to eliminate redundant layers and overlapping responsibilities. Beyond the staff reductions, the company is mandating that most hybrid employees return to physical offices for two to three days each week, starting in January. Sydney will serve as the primary hub for these product-focused operations.

Departing staff members are being offered a severance package that includes at least six months of salary, one year of healthcare coverage, and dedicated career placement support. This announcement follows a similar trend in the tech sector, with Squarespace confirming a 19 percent workforce reduction just one day earlier.
