The scale of the AI buildout is creating an unprecedented demand for capital. Recent market activity highlights a relentless appetite for debt, even as industry leaders voice concerns over long-term sustainability. Meta recently drew $58 billion in orders for a bond offering intended to raise between $15 billion and $20 billion. Meanwhile, Oracle has signaled a need for an additional $20 billion in bonds, adding to its already significant financial commitments. Alphabet and Microsoft have also entered the fray, with Alphabet securing €6 billion and Microsoft issuing $25 billion in debt—its first such move in a decade.
Roman estimates that financing this AI expansion will require $2 trillion over the next five years. While the debt markets remain receptive, the tension between massive capital expenditure and uncertain future returns is heightening. The fundamental question remains how pricing models and economic outcomes will evolve once the initial wave of infrastructure spending meets the reality of market capacity.
