Claude adds a read-only tool for analyzing personal finances

Claude users in the U.S. will be able to connect bank and credit card accounts and ask the chatbot about their spending. Anthropic’s new Personal Finance tool uses Plaid, is limited to read-only access and is starting to roll out in beta this week to subscribers on Pro, Max and Ultra plans.

Users can ask questions such as “Where did my money go this month?” Claude will total spending across connected accounts and group transactions into categories including rent and utilities, food and drink, and shopping. Follow-up questions can probe whether spending was higher than usual or whether anything was missed.

Anthropic says the tool can also flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that are steadily rising. Users can ask whether they are spending more than they earn, or request an explanation of financial terms such as APR (annual percentage rate), including calculations of how much interest they paid over the past year.

The company says Claude can access a connected bank’s name, the account name and type, the last four digits of the account number, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transaction history. It says the access cannot be used to move, manage or invest money. Conversations in the Personal Finance hub will not be used to train Anthropic’s models, the company added.

Anthropic describes the tool as a way to get answers in everyday language, without ads or sponsored recommendations. Claude does not offer its own credit cards, loans or savings accounts, it said.

The launch puts Claude in competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which introduced similar financial-account tools in May. Anthropic has also been expanding Claude into specialized areas, including legal and financial services, with products launched earlier this year.
